Hi there,
This month's tip: talk about the total, not the payment
"What monthly payment are you looking for?" sounds helpful, but answering it lets a deal be built around the payment, often by stretching the loan or adding extras. Instead, ask: "What's the out-the-door price?" Then compare that total, and arrange financing separately.
More in Dealer fees, explained, or see the full monthly cost with the car loan and true cost calculator.
One line on a car deal
Doc fee: a dealer's charge for paperwork. It's a dealer fee, not a government fee. Some states cap it. Even if a dealer won't remove it, you can negotiate the price of the car to offset it. See Dealer fees decoded.
Reader question
"Is it free to fix a recall?" Yes. Safety recall repairs are done free by dealers. Enter your VIN at NHTSA.gov/recalls to check. See Check for recalls.
